Michael D.N. Laughlin is a full- time career firefighter with Kingston Fire & Rescue. What makes his story unique is that twice Mike returned to his beloved job after serious accidents that could have taken his life. At ages 26 and 35 he suffered major injuries. First in a snowmobile accident he broke his left leg and arm. His leg functions because of permanent metal plates, pins and screws and is marked with skin graft scars.

In an even more catastrophic second accident when a deer ran out in front of his motorcycle he became an above knee amputee. He also broke his back and neck in the catastrophic accident. When Mike realized his leg would never recover, and was in danger of causing a serious infection his first response was “I will be a firefighter again! Take it off and I’ll get a good leg to replace it.” Going back to work was his primary thought and he worked diligently researching prosthetic legs and becoming physically able to do his job again. Despite two metal rods in his back and having a highly technical leg to manoeuvre and adjust to in all his activities Michael became the first full time firefighter in Canada to return to work with an above the knee amputation.

In between the two accidents Mike suffered the loss of a special person in his life to suicide and and the grief drove him to a very dark place often masking the pain with drugs and alcohol. Mike openly talks about drug addiction and having been heavily reliant on pain medication after his first accident. His message is simple. “Never give up.” Keep going and finding the positives in life.  When he isn’t working at his job, he is telling his story to people all over the City of Kingston and beyond. The demand for his public speaking is growing and expanding throughout Canada and the USA.

After the Motorcycle accident Mike met his wife Angela while doing rehab at St.Mary's of the Lake Hospital. She was a nursing student in palliative care while he was in rehab and they found each other during an unusual encounter. Mike now has a beautiful stepdaughter Keiana and a boy of their own Lincoln. He has found happiness and fulfillment despite all the setbacks.
